Into the Streets
Each year, between 300 and 500 new students (newly graduated HS Seniors and transfers from other colleges) arrive at our University – “McKendree University“. They are coming to play sports, become musicians, educators, business people, scientists, (among others), and to learn. They don’t know it yet, but they will find a LOT more.
McKendree University gets all of their new class members each year involved for at least one day out in the community. The yearly introduction to service to the communities around the University is known as “Into The Streets“. A project started to get the “kids” out of the classroom, and into the surrounding area. It also serves to help those who accept their assistance in learning about the students and what they are expecting.
Students and their Faculty guides go everywhere. Some go out to the park. Some help different organizations around the city. Some go to locations outside of Lebanon. The Garden Club gets quite a handful to help with the Mini Park, Mermaid House, the Cross-Roads Garden (lower intersection of routes 4 and 50), and even out at the City Cemetery.
A lot of “people hours” are spent during this one day. Even more if you count the hard work involved in getting things coordinated, receiving groups lined up, students assigned, etc.
We are so blessed to have these young folks turning out, even if for just one day. The invitation is always extended, and in some cases accepted, to continue this great work for the rest of the years that they are in attendance.
Thank you to all members of McKendree University – students, faculty, and staff – that have been with us in the past.
We look forward to the newest classes continuing the tradition.
You all do great things! We remember you!
