What we do!

Garden Club – What we Really Do!

There are many locations around Lebanon where gardens have benefited from the work and advice of the Garden Club of Lebanon and its members.  These include the mini park, Rose Corner (by Tru Value), Mermaid Inn, Post Office, and the Horner Park District parks (McAllister-Johnson and Horner Recreational Park), College Hill Cemetery, McKendree University, and Cedar Ridge Care Center.

Many persons in Lebanon have learned “how to” on many different subjects thanks to GCoL.  These folks have often gone home and started gardens of their own for food or the beauty of flowers and plants.  A lot of great looking additions to our city and the surrounding areas started with contact with the Garden Club.

What does the Garden Club of Lebanon have to offer?
* Fellowship with other folks who don’t mind getting dirt under their fingernails.

* Knowledge of how to do it right and what to do if it ‘just goes a bit astray’ and on various subjects to peak interest.

* Members agree that there is the joy of seeing their plants grow and going to a good cause.

Just a small section of the plants we take to May Market each year.

May Market
Each year the members of the Garden Club spend multiple days in preparing hundreds of plants started for sale at the May Market. Proceeds from the sale go for continuing the work we do around town. Planting trees in the cemetery, maintaining the garden at the Mermaid House, as well as the garden at “Rose Corner” located across from True Value hardware, and adding plants to the multiple community gardens.  A wide variety of plants is made available (over 2000 for the 2021 sale) so check out the listing.

Each year the Garden Club pretty much sells out. Why? Quality, Care and Variety.
* Quality of materials used in the growing process.
* Care in the way they do it.
* And Variety

Garden Tours
Held periodically, our Garden Tours have two purposes in mind.
1) To display some of the most beautiful gardens that you may not get to see on a regular basis. There are so many good ones here in the Lebanon area.
2) Funds raised go directly to our Scholarship Fund. Each year the Garden Club awards a scholarship to a deserving High School Senior.

Farmers’ Market
The Garden Club participated in the Farmer’s Market/Touch A Truck 2022 in Horner Recreational Park. Providing a lot of educational information, answering questions, and having available produce, flowers, or whatever may be growing in our gardens at the time.   Children put together bouquets of fresh cut flowers. Fun time for all.

Rock painting was the highlight of the day.

Seed Library
Located at the public library with great explanation of plants available and how to plant and care for them.

Also check this website for additional information on seeds.

Monthly Garden Get-Togethers
Held the 2nd Monday of the month with a presentation given on various gardening interests.  Visitors and guests are always welcome to attend.  We have returned to in-person meetings, but also try to have a “Zoom” link for those that cannot physically attend. Our meetings will vary as to location as we visit gardens around the area whenever possible.

By the way, membership fees are minimal if you care to join.

Membership Requirements:
Being a member is not required to participate in GCoL activities. Visitors and guests are always welcome!
But check out the minuscule membership fees, and you will see there is no reason to forego this status.
